Ten Years of Punk Cinema
The LA Punk Film Festival was born from a combination of Los Angeles punk history, independent filmmaking, film festival production, publicity, community involvment and a lifelong commitment to creating platforms for independent artists.
It began in 2017 as a Los Angeles Punk Film Festival and not just a event and has grown into an international film festival and a worldwide exhibition platform for punk cinema.
In 2026, LA Punk Film Festival celebrates its 10th Annual International Festival.
But the story of the festival begins well before 2017.
BEFORE THE FESTIVAL
A Foundation in Film, Festivals & Independent Production
LA Punk Film Festival was created by filmmaker and producer Sandie West, founder of Beach Dancer Films.
Before establishing the LA Punk Film Festival, West had already spent years working across independent film production, publicity, founder and producer of 12 different film festivals, working as an actor, and filmmaker in the entertainment business and a leader in the Los Angeles creative community.
Beach Dancer Films became a home for independent film and festival development, providing a base from which Sandie West produced and supported a growing number of film and television projects as well as film-festival programming.
West’s festival experience eventually expanded to numerous local and international film festivals and events. Her work as a producer and festival organizer provided the practical foundation for building a festival from the ground up, from submissions and programming to publicity, filmmaker relationships, screenings and awards.
Her background also included entertainment publicity, marketing and including doing publicity work connected to major industry events such as the SAG Awards and Academy Awards.
This combination of independent production and mainstream entertainment experience became an important part of the festival’s identity:
Independent enough to remain punk, but professional enough to build a real international film platform.
LOS ANGELES FILM COMMUNITY
Venice, Film & Community
The festival’s roots are deeply connected to Venice, California.
Sandie West was serving as a board member with the Venice Chamber of Commerce and helped establish and chair the Venice Media Committee, creating connections between the local creative community, media, independent businesses and the entertainment industry.
West is also a voting member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and served on the board for the iBAFTA’s digital-film community. A BAFTA membership record lists Sandie West among the Academy’s full members since 1992.
These experiences brought together three worlds that would eventually become central to LA Punk Film Festival:

2017 : THE FIRST LA PUNK FILM FESTIVAL
Beyond Baroque — Venice, California
In 2017, the LA Punk Film Festival was established in Los Angeles .
The first festival grew: Sandie West of Beach Dancer Films and Venice Chamber of Commerce opened in 2017 @Beyond Baroque. That year we exhibited art from LA Punk Museum.
The idea was simple:
Create a film festival for punk films.
Not simply films about famous punk musicians.
Not simply music documentaries.
But films that were about, by and for punks.
The first festival was held at Beyond Baroque in Venice, an institution deeply connected to Los Angeles’ literary, artistic and punk history. This was chosen as ground zero for punk in LA where X, the band began.
The festival was supported by the Venice Chamber of Commerce as part of the celebration of 40 years of punk in Los Angeles. Sandie West has just finished wrapping up a 40 yr tour and film with a attached documentary of The Gonads, a UK Band with a celebrity singer, Gary Bushell. A band who are never trying to “make it!” Its a comedy.
The choice of Beyond Baroque was particularly meaningful. John Doe and Exene Cervenka of X had met there in a poetry class, making the venue itself part of Los Angeles punk history.
The festival’s second annual edition returned to Beyond Baroque in March 2018, and contemporary reporting confirms that the festival had begun the previous year.
This was the beginning.
FILM FREEWAY & THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL MODEL
From its early years, LA Punk Film Festival developed as a real film-submission festival, rather than simply a curated punk movie night.
The festival began accepting independent films through FilmFreeway, allowing filmmakers to submit their completed work for consideration.
This created a formal pathway for filmmakers outside Los Angeles to participate.
The festival’s submission categories expanded to include:
- Narrative features
- Documentary features
- Short films
- Music documentaries
- Music videos
- Screenplays
- Genre films
- Experimental work
- Television and episodic programming
- Independent productions
The festival’s current FilmFreeway profile identifies LA Punk Film Festival as 10 Years Running, with Sandie West listed as Festival Producer & Director and international film submissions, official selections and awards.
This evolution transformed the festival from a local Los Angeles punk event into an international independent film festival.
2018 — BUILDING THE PUNK FILM COMMUNITY
The second annual festival continued the relationship between Los Angeles punk history and independent cinema.
Films were curated by Tequila Mockingbird and Sandie West, with the guiding philosophy that films could be “about, by and for punks.”
The festival also began establishing its own award tradition, recognizing filmmakers across categories rather than limiting awards to a single “best punk film.”
Over the years, the festival would recognize documentaries, features, shorts, music videos, comedy, horror, animation, screenwriting and other forms of independent storytelling.
2019 — EXPANDING THE FESTIVAL
By 2019, LA Punk Film Festival had grown into a multi-screen event with awards, red carpet programming, filmmaker Q&As, music and multiple film blocks.
The festival continued to be produced through Beach Dancer Films, with Sandie West overseeing festival production.
The festival’s programming brought together punk history, new independent filmmakers and films exploring the broader spirit of punk.
The festival was not limited to one definition of punk.
It became a place for films dealing with:
rebellion.
individuality.
social change.
music.
outsider culture.
identity.
DIY creativity.
freedom of expression.
2020 — PUNK CINEMA STREAMING
The Pandemic Changes Film Festivals
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic transformed the film-festival world.
Live theaters closed.
Filmmakers could not travel.
Audiences could not gather.
Rather than stop, LA Punk Film Festival moved into online exhibition.
The festival’s fifth annual program was presented through streaming, with films released online over multiple days and an online awards presentation.
JOHN DOE OF X HOSTS THE FILM AWARDS AND INTERVIEWS AND STREAMS ONLINE
The 2020 archive documents awards for U.S. and international films, including filmmakers from Canada, Australia and Italy, demonstrating the increasingly international nature of the festival. It also documents a live-stream interview with punk icon John Doe.
This moment changed the festival permanently.
The festival discovered that punk cinema did not have to be limited to one theater in Los Angeles.
A filmmaker could be in Australia.
Another could be in Italy.
Another could be in Canada.
Another could be in Los Angeles.
And they could all become part of the same festival.
THE STREAMING EXHIBITION EVOLVES
What began as a response to the pandemic became part of the festival’s long-term future.
LA Punk Film Festival continued developing its online exhibition model, eventually creating a broader international streaming program that could serve filmmakers who could not travel to Los Angeles.
The online program also opened the festival to audiences outside Southern California.
Today, the festival combines the energy of a live Los Angeles festival with an international online exhibition.
The result is a hybrid festival model:

FROM FESTIVAL TO PUNK WORLDWIDE PORTAL
The festival’s evolution has continued beyond simply putting films online.
The 2026 festival describes itself as the Punk Worldwide Portal.
The idea is to create an ongoing connection between:
filmmakers
audiences
punk communities
musicians
artists
independent producers
and
international film culture.
The 2026 FilmFreeway profile identifies the festival as the 10th Annual LA Punk Film Festival, running October 9–18, 2026, and continuing its online festival and awards component.
THE AUDIENCE BECOMES PART OF THE FESTIVAL
The online exhibition has also created a new opportunity:
The audience vote.
Rather than limiting the festival experience to a traditional jury, LA Punk Film Festival gives audiences an opportunity to discover films through the online exhibition and participate in audience recognition.
This creates a second pathway for filmmakers:
Jury recognition
and
Audience recognition.
The goal is not simply to determine which film is technically “best.”
It is to discover which stories connect with people.
PUNK CINEMA WITHOUT BORDERS
Over the years, LA Punk Film Festival has welcomed filmmakers from around the world.
The festival’s programming has included filmmakers and films connected to the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, Australia, Italy, Poland, Finland, France and other countries.
The international nature of the festival reflects something fundamental about punk itself:
Punk has never belonged to one country.
Los Angeles has its own punk history.
Berlin has its own.
London has its own.
Tokyo has its own.
New York has its own.
Every scene has its own stories.
Film allows those stories to cross borders.
LOS ANGELES & BERLIN
Two Cities. Two Festivals. One Punk Cinema.
LA Punk Film Festival proudly recognizes Punkfilmfest Berlin — Too Drunk to Watch as another important long-running home for dedicated punk cinema.
Berlin and Los Angeles have different histories, different scenes and different festival identities.
But both cities have deep connections to underground music, independent art, DIY culture and punk.
Punkfilmfest Berlin has developed an international platform for punk documentaries, features and shorts.
LA Punk Film Festival has developed its own international platform from Los Angeles, combining live screenings with online exhibition.
Neither festival needs to own punk cinema.
We are part of its continuing history.
Together, festivals like these help ensure that punk filmmakers have somewhere to show their work, audiences have somewhere to discover it, and punk stories continue to be documented for future generations.

Ten years ago, the festival began with a simple idea:

Ten years later, that idea has become an international film community.
The festival has grown from its beginnings at Beyond Baroque in Venice into an international submission platform, live festival, awards program and worldwide online exhibition.
The festival has screened independent films.
Introduced filmmakers to audiences.
Celebrated punk history.
Hosted musicians and artists.
Presented awards.
Created opportunities for international filmmakers.
And continued adapting as the film industry changed.
A DECADE OF INDEPENDENCE
LA Punk Film Festival exists because independent filmmakers continue to create.
Because punk culture continues to evolve.
Because audiences continue to want stories outside the mainstream.
And because someone has to provide a place for those stories to be seen.
The festival’s philosophy remains rooted in the same spirit that inspired its creation:

THE FUTURE OF PUNK CINEMA
The next chapter of punk cinema will not necessarily look like the last one.
New filmmakers are using new technology.
New scenes are emerging.
New voices are documenting their communities.
And new audiences are discovering punk culture around the world.
The mission of LA Punk Film Festival is therefore not simply to preserve the past.
It is to document the present and create a platform for the future.
