WHY DO WE REQUIRE A DCP?
Your Film Deserves to Look Its Best on the Big Screen.
If your film is selected for a live theatrical screening, LA Punk Film Festival requires a DCP (Digital Cinema Package) for professional cinema presentation.
A DCP is the industry-standard format used to deliver films to digital cinema projection systems.
Why does that matter?
A film file that looks perfect on a computer, television or streaming platform does not necessarily play correctly through a professional theater’s projection system.
A DCP is specifically prepared for cinema playback.
It preserves the filmmaker’s intended:
- Picture quality
- Resolution
- Aspect ratio
- Frame rate
- Color presentation
- Audio channels
- Subtitles and captions
- Film credits
It also allows the theater’s projection team to load, test and play the film reliably using professional digital cinema equipment.
A DCP IS NOT THE SAME AS AN MP4.
An MP4 is excellent for online viewing, screeners and streaming.
A DCP is designed for theatrical exhibition.
For this reason, LA Punk Film Festival may accept a digital file for initial submission and selection, but films selected for a live theater screening must ultimately be delivered in the required theatrical format and on time (at least 10 days before) to be included in the programming at the theater.
WHY WE TEST YOUR FILM
Before your screening, our projection team may test your DCP to make sure:

✓ Picture plays correctly
✓ Audio is synchronized
✓ Aspect ratio is correct
✓ Subtitles display properly
✓ The film runs for its complete duration
✓ The file is compatible with the theater’s projection system
This testing helps prevent technical problems during the festival.
WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A DCP?
Don’t worry.
Many independent filmmakers do not create DCPs themselves.

YOUR ONLINE EXHIBITION IS DIFFERENT
If your film is selected for the International Streaming Exhibition / Punk Worldwide Portal, a DCP is generally not required for the online exhibition.
The streaming platform uses a digital master appropriate for online exhibition.
Think of it this way:
DCP → Theater
Digital Master → Streaming
